we are having trouble installing the battery pak.
Ours went on readily, can’t think of any reason for your predicament. If it was forced in perhaps one or more of the connector pins on either side may have been damaged. If so try to straighten them out. Good luck

Can I buy just a battery and charger?
Can’t really answer that as they came with the trimmer, however I would consider enquiring some stores that sell and repair those machines.

Can you wind your own string on or do you have to buy a new replacement spool every time it runs out?
You can spool your own string if you want however the automatic string advance may not work.

Why won’t the trimmer cord come out automatically?
I am not having this problem but could be to the cord gets tangled in the spool.

Need replacement spool. What info do i need to purchase replacement spool
The replacement spool is Black & Decker AF-100 and contains about 30 ft of line. You can also buy off brand spools online for about 1/4 the cost or if you want to reload the original spool you can buy .065 bulk line up to 300 ft at about 1/10 the cost.

How does the battery get charged ? All my other battery tools ( Dewalt and Bosch) have a separate charger. Do I need an additional charger or does the battery charge in place.I was also thinking of purchasing a lawn mower how does this charge.

Does it work with a B&D 2.0 ah Li-ion battery
As long as the 2.0ah battery is rated for 20volts and if it fits into the battery slot of the trimmer, it will work, however your run time will be shorter.

Mine is less than 3000 square feet and the battery easily does everything on high power without using the whole battery. Note that this does have a brush motor so not sure how long it'll last and it does make slightly more noise and vibration, but has plenty of power. I like the stand-off wheel for cutting against fences without beating them up with the string. This thing is minimum 2lbs lighter than the bigger 14-16" competitors, so it's a lot easier to use (and you could always get a bigger battery for medium size yards), but I would recommend looking elsewhere for big yards.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Alanbc from Good unit with a terrible feed mechanism Overall, I quite the unit, particularly the ease with which it goes from conventional trimmer to edger. And I like being able to interchange batteries with my other B&D gardening tools. But the automatic feed has never worked, not from day one, not with the original spool, not with new spools, not with hand wound spools. And the Dewalt/B&D repair was not able to fix it either, and hinted that "they all do that". So every few minutes, I have to turn it upside down and manually unwind some string, which gets annoying. With a working feed, I'd give the unit 6 stars out of 5. As is, I give it a generous 3 stars.

I have extra batteries and line spools so I searched for an exact replacement. I found this one and am very happy with it. I wish the weed eater/edger was available separately instead of having to purchase a kit that includes parts I already have. It would be nice if the description included the part numbers for replacement line spools and batteries. It would also be nice if the description provided line length and diameter as well as battery storage rating in milli-ampres/hour.

This trimmer has an improved battery (2.5 Ah battery) and lasted for good 20-25 minutes at high power setting. Hope the battery will last long but I am having a lot of fun owning a trimmer for the first time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by David M from Great value for the price. I had the previous version for 5 years. This trimmer is much lighter and takes the older versions batteries. I'm not a B&D person but this trimmer is very nice. I highly recommend for medium yard work and trimming.

I have a 10,000 sf yard and used the product on the entire outline of the front yard and the back yard. I used the low speed (1) and was able to complete the entire job. I switched to high speed to see how much more I had left and it only lasted another 5 minutes or so. Overall, I would estimate (I did not time) that the low speed setting will provide around 45 minutes of operation. Also, love the front wheel for guiding edge work...made the job go smoothly and quickly. The auto trimming for the cord worked perfectly...a nice feature. Finally, the unit it light weight and well balanced. For the price this is a hard to beat trimmer for individual home use.
